A Surreal Desert Escape: Road Tripping from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree

Southern California makes leaving the city feel easy. Within a couple of hours, Los Angeles gives way to something entirely different – open desert, quiet roads, and a landscape that feels almost unreal.

The day begins slowly with a complimentary yoga class at the hotel next door – a quiet prelude before the drive east.

Driving in LA isn’t something I’d volunteer for (the wrong side of the road doesn’t help), but with someone else behind the wheel, I’m always in. We leave mid-morning, heading east with a loose plan – Joshua Tree for the day, and back by evening.

The Quirky Road to Joshua Tree

The shift begins just outside the city. Traffic thins, the air sharpens, and eventually the horizon opens up. On the way in, we pass stretches of wind turbines – endless and rhythmic – marking the edge of the Mojave desert.

A quick stop in Palm Springs for an iced latte feels necessary rather than indulgent. We wander briefly past giant dinosaur sculptures before continuing on, as the landscape softens into the sand, rock, and light.

Joshua Tree National Park: A Place Like No Other

Joshua Tree National Park feels otherworldly on arrival. The terrain is scattered with enormous boulders and its namesake trees — spiked, twisted, and slightly surreal. We keep things simple and intuitive, stopping where it feels right rather than trying to see everything.

Hidden Valley is our first walk — an easy loop, but one that quickly pulls you in. From there, we make our way towards Skull Rock, pausing often, climbing where we can, and exploring formations that feel almost placed rather than formed.

For anyone drawn to nature, this is where the desert reveals itself. Chipmunks dart between rocks, lizards flicker across the sand, and there’s a quiet hum of life – bees, birds, small movements you only notice when you slow down.

The heat is immediate – starkly warmer than Los Angeles – and a reminder to take things slowly. Water is essential, and so is knowing when to pause.
